All carpets are fitted by our own team of experienced expert fitters who have worked in every type of property from starter homes to country mansions. Our services include uplifting existing floor coverings, sub-floors repairs and preparation, moving and replacing furniture, door trimming, and stain protection. As standard we vacuum throughout, remove all waste materials to our own facility, and leave everything clean and tidy.

Extensive Range

Our extensive range of carpets covers a wide variety of weaves, styles and textures all of which have with their own unique characteristics affecting how a carpet handles, how it is fitted, and how it will look and perform once installed. The construction, backing, room type, and environment all have a bearing on how a carpet is installed. Plant Fibre carpets, such as sisal and seagrass are unlike traditional carpets and have a particular method of installation which is covered later on this page. The type of backing also plays an important roll on how the carpet should be installed.

Plant Fibre

Sisal, seagrass and jute carpets with latex backings are installed with a dense rubber crumb underlay using the ‘double-stick’ method. They are susceptible to moisture changes in the environment which can result in shrinkage. To prevent this, they should be acclimatised correctly, by placing the carpets in the rooms, or property in which they are to be fitted a minimum of 72 hours prior to installation. The property should be in a finished state with all building work completed, and in a habitable condition. As these types of carpet are bonded down to the sub-floor it is important the sub-floor is clean, dry, smooth, and flat. We will advise on sub-floor preparation and provide a quotation any work that is required.

Access

It is impotant to consider access especailly if the room is large or up a narrow or winding staircase. Carpets can be large, heavy and difficult to handle. For our super wide widths which are avialable up to 12 metres wide specialist transport is required and a team of men to unload. It is usual for carpets to be bent over where access is restricted, especially when taking carpets to upper floors. Carpets are a soft material so will regain its shape once stretched into place.

Sub-floors

The quality of the sub-floor has a direct impact on the finished installation. A good, clean, flat, smooth sub-floor will provide the perfect base for any floor covering. Carpets can be more forgiving than wood or Luxury Vinyl Tiles, both of which require a perfectly prepared sub-floor. A thick carpet with an underlay can mask imperfections in the sub-floor so preparation is less critical. Conversley a thin carpet bonded directly without an underlay will telegraph any imperfections of the sub-floor below so it is important that good preparation is carried out prior to fitting.

Floorboards

Older type properties were constructed using suspended timber joists covered with floorboards. Over time these boards may have been lifted to gain access to services below. They may be loose, uneven or be broken in places. Some may squeak of cause annoying sounds. These noises can also be caused by the joists beneath, or a combination of the joists and the floorboards together. It is not always possible to eradicate these sounds by carrying out remedial repairs such as inserting screws of replacing the one or two boards. The floorboards may need replacing with new boarding. For small repairs our fitters can insert screws to floorboards if you can provide assurances that water pipes will not be affected. Any cutting or replacing of floorboards should be carried out by other parties prior to our arrival.

Seams

Carpets are usually manufactured to a maximum width of five metres, although we do offer a bespoke service up to twelve metres wide. If the room is larger than the width of carpet available two carpets will be seamed together. We plan areas carefully with consideration for doorways, furniture and areas of high traffic to ensure seams are in the least noticeable place. Factors that influence the appearance of a seam include weave, backing and colour. It is not possible to join carpets that are flat woven or have a cross weave. We will advise you if your preferred choice of carpet is not suitable to be seamed. Seams will nearly always be visible; however, they may bed down over time.

Odour

It is not uncommon for new carpets and underlay to have an unusual odour which can be caused by the materials used in their manufacture. Carpets are wrapped up as soon as they are made to protect them from dirt and contamination which trap smells inside the wrapping until they are installed. These will dissipate over time and will not cause any harm. All products pass the relevant British and European standards for use in private and public buildings.

Batch Matching

Due to limitations in yarn dying, variations may occur between different batches. Some manufacturers source yarn from different suppliers which can impact colour variation. If you are looking to cover several rooms with the same floor covering, we recommend ordering at the same time to avoid any potential variations. Some manufacturers offer a cutting service free of charge from existing stock so you can check your chosen colour prior to committing. If a precise colour is important to you, please ask a member of our team about this service.

Cleaning

All carpets will benefit through regular maintenance which will prolong their lifecycle. Recommendations will vary depending on level of use, however vacuuming once to twice a week will remove dirt, debris and particles which cause premature wear. For loop pile carpets use a cleaner with suction only, without a beater bar, as this will disturb the pile and cause pilling. For cut pile carpets either type of cleaner can be used. Ideally carpets should be professionally cleaned every two to three years, depending on the level of use. We can provide spot cleaners which can be used on small areas for cleaning up spills or accidents. Please try these on an inconspicuous area first such as a cupboard, or under a piece of furniture. To avoid shrinkage woven carpets should not be wet cleaned.
