A striped rug is a good option for a hallway, as it draws the eye inwards; stripes are also very forgiving in high-traffic areas, where they hide everyday scuff and marks. A striped rug will add texture and contrast and can also be useful in creating optical effects: how you orientate the stripes in relation to the room’s shape and dimensions can make it appear wider, or draw the space together. It’s always important to consider the underlying flooring when choosing a striped rug: bold, rich colours will work well against pale wood or light-coloured carpet, while something more neutral can set off a darker floor.
