Carpets made from plant fibres offer great, natural alternatives to wool, nylon and other yarns. The two main plant fibres used in carpet-making are sisal and jute. Sisal is a natural fibre extracted from the leaves of the agave, a succulent desert plant now widely cultivated in Africa, Brazil and Mexico (where one of its relatives is the source of tequila). Our Surrey carpet showroom displays all jute and sisal carpets by Crucial Trading, Fibre, Kersaint Cobb & Alternative Flooring.
Sisal is highly sustainable, biodegradable and is generally grown organically, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to reduce your environmental impact. It is also extremely tough: in its raw state, the fibres are used to make ships’ ropes. As a carpet material, sisal is exceptionally hardwearing and anti-static, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways, landings and staircases. Unusually for a plant fibre, sisal can be dyed; combined with its ability to be made into tight, decorative weaves, it offers a huge choice of colours, textures and patterns. One of the best examples is Sisal Herringbone by Crucial Trading. And although it’s very tough, sisal will soften with regular use and vacuuming.
If you’re looking for a naturally softer plant fibre carpet, you might consider jute. Jute fibres are much finer than sisal, creating a soft feel underfoot that makes jute carpets ideal for bedrooms and living spaces. Jute carpets also tend to be more cost-effective than sisal: the trade-off is that, since jute does not dye easily, the range of colours is more limited; and if longevity is a consideration, we would recommend sisal carpet, which generally lasts longer than jute carpet.
